Hiding things to prevent them from getting stolen or lost is a situation we have all been in, at one point or another in our lives. Some of us believe in the hide-in-plain-sight philosophy, while others prefer being more discrete and cautious of our belongings and valuables, making sure that our precious possessions remain hidden. Here are some out-of-the-box ideas for you to create a secret stash.
A book safe
A book safe is a rather easy craft project that can double as a safe storage area for some cash or jewelry. Find a boring title, hollow it out from the mid, keep your valuables inside and stack it on your bookshelf. The thieves won’t get an idea of which book to look at, but you must remember the title of your secret book safe!
An old Vacuum cleaner
This is a great, inexpensive option that kills two birds with one stone. You would be finding a safe space for your valuables while making use of an old piece of cleaning equipment that would otherwise be gathering dust in the garage. A non-functioning vacuum cleaner that utilizes a bag is the perfect choice for the job. Simply take the bag out, stash in your cash along with other valuables, andslot it back inside the cleaner. Keep the old vacuum in a closet along with your cleaning supplies, and no one would even dreamof checking the rusted-out machine for anything worthy!
A can of chips
Burglars often check up on pantries and liquor drawers when they are on the hunt for cash, and many times people use empty cans to stash in some cash, which they can easily find. What we propose is a functional item, that contains some of its original contents, but with a secret compartment for the cash, so that the real thing can throw off the burglars, keeping your valuables safe and sound in the process.
Simply take a can of potato crisps, cut away the bottom and make a small safe using hot glue and PVC. Lifting up the lid will only reveal the crisps inside, while your money stays hidden in the secret PVC safe. Disclaimer: do not mistake the can for regular chips and toss it out after you’ve your snack. It is suggested to keep this can outside and away from the regular pantry items to fool any would-be burglar into thinking that someone was simply snackin’ and forgot the chips outside.
Make sure that you remember where you have hidden your valuables, otherwise you may unknowingly throw away the secret stash of book or cans. Pro tip: devise a secret blueprint/map that pinpoints the exact location of your secret treasure chest to ensure that you don’t forget it’s hiddent location in the future.
