Humans have lived on this earth for approximately 6 million years and in those 6 million years, humankind has advanced and modernized greatly. From creating a wheel to discovering new planets, we have come a long way. And in this journey of advancement, humans have also come in contact with certain discoveries that have changed the world and paved the way for future discoveries, inventions and theories.
No one quite knows what the world would’ve been like if these discoveries were never made but it is indeed a good thing that they helped advance our civilization as a whole. If you are interested in knowing what are the shocking discoveries that changed the world forever, keep on reading.
1. The Big Bang Theory
It was during the ‘20s that influential physicists George Lemaitre and Edwin Hubble noticed that the universe was expanding. Not only that, but they also discovered that this expansion was happening at a very rapid pace. This insinuated that the universe had originally started out small and had begun to slowly grow. Scientists believe that there was a big bang that led to the creation of the universe and now this theory has become the most accepted cosmological model of the universe.
2. Electricity
Given the fact that almost everything runs on electricity today, it’s odd to even think about a time when it wasn’t discovered–-but it is a good thing that it was. Electricity was observed in natural phenomena such as lighting and in magnetic fields but it took time for humans to be able to generate it themselves. While Benjamin Franklin dedicated his time and effort to study lighting, in reality, it was Michael Faraday who tirelessly worked to invest in the electric motor which then led to the creation of the first light bulb.
3. Penicillin
Penicillin, the world’s first attempt at making antibiotics derived from mold, is the basis for modern antibiotic medicine. Penicillin was discovered by Alexander Fleming in 1928 and it is used to fight broad-spectrum medical problems, especially the ones caused by strep bacteria such as strep throat and strep meningitis. Fleming also pioneered the germ theory and brought to light the fact that microbes and germs cause illnesses.
