McKenzie Scott is a well-known philanthropist and novelist. Other than that, she’s known for her involvement in Amazon and her marriage with Jeff Bezos, which has since been dissolved. Back when Amazon wasn’t the tech giant it is today and couldn’t deliver parcels to homes all over America, the novelist’s life was totally different from what it is today. This is when Scott decided to turn things around and moved to New York City.
Like most new college graduates, she faced difficulties paying bills and so, she started working as a waitress to make ends meet. However, the time and attention demanded by her work barely allowed her any free time to focus on her writing. She revealed that she was so busy making sandwiches at her job that in the little chunks of free time she got in between, she would just collapse from frustration and exhaustion.
How Her Life Changed Completely
McKenzie has been candid about the time when her life as a waitress just wasn’t fulfilling enough and so, she took another job at the hedge fund D.E Shaw. This proved to be a turning point in her life and career because, for this particular job, she was interviewed by none other than Jeff Bezos himself, someone she ended up working next to, and later, being married to. Yes, this is the same Jeff Bezos who owns Amazon and is estimated to be worth over $177 billion.
Bezos and Scott got married in 1993 and the couple moved to Bellevue, Washington the following year. After moving, they had started work on what would later be called Amazon.
Her Accomplishments
During the three decades that Scott faced problems with living costs and rent payments, she managed to publish 2 books. The first of the two was published in 2005 and the subsequent one in 2013. After her marriage, the market capitalization of Amazon also grew to over $1.5 trillion but sadly, Bezos and Scott got divorced in 2019, which meant that she recieved 25% of her husband’s shares in the company.
Forbes has recorded that today, the 52-year-old philanthropist has a net worth of $42 million! If a New York waitress struggling to pay rent can do it, so can you!
